Centre Curriculum

Wednesday 18th, July

In Anchor Childcare Centre, staff support children’s initiatives and desire to explore their environment. Staff understand that children are self motivated to explore and that these explorations lead to key experiences, which are a fundamental part of each child’s growth and development.

Where age appropriate, the children plan their own activities with their Key Worker and there is time allocated to discuss the activities the children took part in each day.

Planning allows children to follow through on their interests purposefully and creatively and in the process the children develop interest, curiosity, resourcefulness, independence and responsibility, habits of mind that will serve them through to their adult life.

Anchor Childcare will continually examine, evaluate and update practices and programs we have in place to ensure best practice quality care is maintained throughout the Centre.

A consistent daily routine provides a sense of security for the child and encourages children to plan ahead and feel in control. Centre Staff plan the routine timetable based on room opening hours, length of session and mealtimes and it will differ room to room.

A planned daily routine in each room allows for repetition and affords children the freedom to explore, practice and gain confidence in their developing skills. Appropriate time is given to each segment of the day and the routine provides opportunities to play individually and in small or large groups, indoors and outdoors. Time is also allocated for children to rest, to eat and drink and to tidy up. Children are not rushed through activities but move smoothly at their own pace from one interesting experience to another. The establishment of a daily routine is essential for young children. They need to be able to predict what is likely to happen next and the sharing of control between adult and child is an important part of the childcare process.

Siolta and Aistear are the national frameworks for early learning which support services for children from birth to six years. Staff in Anchor Childcare have attended training in Siolta standards as part of our training programme.
